Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
